Things to Do in Southend This Summer 2026: A Victoria Centre Guide

School holidays are nearly here, the seafront is getting busier, and Southend is ready for summer. From beach days and live music to family festivals, creative workshops and easy rainy-day plans, there’s plenty happening across the city this July and August.

Whether you’re planning a full day out with the kids, meeting friends in town, or looking for something free to do during the holidays, here’s your guide to making the most of summer in Southend.

Seaside Days & Outdoor Adventures

Walk Southend Pier

No Southend summer is complete without a trip along the pier. Stretching out into the Thames Estuary, Southend Pier gives you sea views, fresh air and that proper seaside feeling without needing to over-plan the day.

Walk the full length if you’re feeling energetic, or take the railway if little legs need saving. It’s a great one for families, visitors, grandparents with the kids, or anyone who just wants a quieter moment away from the busier seafront.

Spend the Day at Adventure Island

For big summer energy, Adventure Island is always a favourite. With rides, arcades, food spots and plenty happening around the seafront, it’s one of those classic Southend days out that works especially well during the school holidays.

Go for the bigger rides, keep it simple with the smaller family attractions, or just soak up the atmosphere along the seafront. Either way, it’s an easy way to turn a sunny afternoon into a proper day out.

Head to Shoebury East Beach

If you want a slightly calmer beach day, Shoebury East Beach is a lovely choice. It’s set away from the main seafront, with space for picnics, grassy areas and long views across the estuary.

Pack towels, snacks, sun cream and a few beach games, then settle in for a slower kind of summer day. It’s ideal for families who want the coast without being right in the middle of the busiest spots.

Explore Old Leigh

Old Leigh is made for summer wandering. Think cobbled streets, fishing boats, pubs, seafood, ice cream and views across the water.

It’s a brilliant option for a relaxed afternoon, especially if you want something that feels a bit different from the main seafront. Walk along the water, stop for food, browse the area and make the most of those longer summer evenings.

Music, Festivals and Summer Events

Lazydays Festival: 24 to 26 July 2026

Lazydays Festival returns to Priory Park from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 July, bringing live music, street food, independent drinks, entertainment and a proper summer festival atmosphere to Southend.

It’s a big one for music lovers, food fans and families looking for something a bit more special during the holidays. With space to relax, plenty to explore and entertainment beyond the main stage, it’s a strong start to the summer break.

Music in the Park

Music in the Park continues across the summer, bringing live performances to local green spaces including Southchurch Park.

It’s simple, relaxed and exactly the kind of thing Southend does well. Bring a blanket, grab a drink, find a spot on the grass and enjoy live music without needing to make a huge plan around it.

For families, it’s also a good low-pressure option. Children can move around, adults can actually sit down for a bit, and everyone gets some fresh air.

Southend City Jam: 28 to 30 August 2026

To round off the summer, Southend City Jam returns from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August, transforming parts of the city centre and seafront with large-scale street art, live painting and creative energy.

Expect colour, murals, artists at work and a brilliant reason to walk through the city with fresh eyes. It’s one of Southend’s standout cultural events and a great way to close out the school holidays before September routines return.

Family-Friendly Summer Ideas

Take a Boat Trip

For a different view of the coastline, look out for boat trips running from Southend during the summer season.

It’s a great way to make the day feel like more of an adventure, especially for children who love being out on the water. Pair it with a pier walk, lunch on the seafront or a wander through town afterwards.

Visit Priory Park

Priory Park is always a good summer option. There’s space to walk, picnic, play and take things at a slower pace, which is exactly what you need when the school holidays start filling up.

It’s also close enough to the city centre to combine with lunch, shopping or a visit to The Victoria Centre, making it easy to build into a bigger day out.

Keep an Eye Out for Classic Cars on the Beach

Classic Cars on the Beach is a popular Southend favourite, usually bringing vintage motors and plenty of nostalgia to City Beach during the warmer months.

If you’re already heading to the seafront, it’s worth checking what’s on before you go. It’s free, easy to enjoy while passing through, and gives families something extra to see between beach time, food and rides.

Indoor Escapes and Shopping

Rainy-Day Rescue: The Victoria Centre

Summer in Southend is lovely, but let’s be honest, British weather does like to keep everyone guessing.

When the clouds roll in or you need a break from the heat, The Victoria Centre is an easy indoor option. Browse the shops, pick up summer essentials, treat yourself to something new, or stop for food and coffee while everyone resets.

It’s also a handy base during a day in town. Wide walkways, places to sit, free Wi-Fi and family-friendly facilities make it a comfortable place to pause between activities.

Make Time for Coffee, Lunch and a Little Browse

A summer day out does not always need to be packed from start to finish. Sometimes the best bit is finding somewhere to sit, getting a cold drink or coffee, and giving everyone a breather.

At The Victoria Centre, you can stop for lunch, browse gifts, pick up holiday bits, or enjoy a slower hour before heading back out into Southend. Perfect if you’re balancing children, shopping bags, changing weather and the usual school holiday chaos.
